Supergirl: Worth Your Time?

Hey everybody, welcome back. This is Todd with Movies Guys Like.

Today we're talking about Supergirl. And look — this movie has taken a lot of heat from critics lately. Some of it I agree with. But some of it? Pretty unfair. Let's get into it.

The Cast

Let's start with the people calling out Millie Alcock and saying she wasn't a great actress in this movie. I think that's wrong. She did a great job. She was believable, surprisingly human, and I think a lot of the discredit out there is pretty unfair to her.

David Corenswet reprised his role as Superman in a couple of scenes. Matias Varela played Krem, and honestly he was probably one of the weakest parts of the film. His character reminded me of Pinhead and it just wasn't a great fit.

Eve Ridley did a great job as Ruthie. And then there's Jason Momoa as Lobo. Here's the thing: Momoa also plays Aquaman in the same universe. So it's a little strange to see him playing both a good guy and a bad guy in the same universe. But I digress.

What Works

The acting from Millie and Eve was genuinely good. The action sequences delivered — there were some solid fight scenes and death scenes that landed well.

The best part of the movie is what it does with Supergirl as a character. Millie as Supergirl is way more convincing as a relatable person to humankind than Superman is, in my opinion. You see that she has an affinity for the sauce, and you feel bad for her — she was abandoned just like Superman was and she has trouble dealing with it. By the end of the movie, things are better for her, and I really liked the way that played out.

Jason Momoa as Lobo worked better than I expected. He's an anti-hero — good and bad parts — and he really sat into that role. It fit him well.

And here's something worth saying: this wasn't a statement piece. There weren't a lot of political, spiritual, sexual, or social statements being pushed. It was just a movie meant to entertain. And I was entertained.

Where It Falls Short

The movie was too long. There were too many slow spots where it dragged on. The action sequences, while good, were choppy — it felt patched together in places, like the filming style didn't quite hold up.

The other thing I didn't like: the flashbacks. I've never been a fan of flashbacks. I know they're necessary sometimes, but in this movie there were just too many of them. That's a ding from me.

The villain, Krem, just wasn't convincing. The story itself was okay — nothing more, nothing less.

The Basic Gist (No Spoilers)

The story is based off the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book series. Supergirl is on a bender, Eve's character is looking after Krem and his people for something they did, and Supergirl gets roped into helping them. One of Supergirl's close friends — wink wink, the dog — gets hurt along the way, and she has to figure out what to do about that. I'll leave it there.

The Verdict

If it wasn't for the ending, I probably would have given this movie a pile of steaming dog poop — because there wasn't enough good to overrule the bad for most of the runtime. But the ending saved it.

My rating: a Pink Star. Pink star — not because a girl is in it, because Millie kicked ass. It's the story and the direction we're dinging here, not her. I'm also giving it because I did look at my watch a couple of times as it dragged on. No corniness — especially compared to the 1984 Supergirl, which was a full-on mess. And for the good scenes it did deliver.

You can see it in the theater if you want the full effect of the special effects, but seeing it at home will be just fine too.
